Providence Life Design Pivot: A Narrative of Curiosity, Empathy, and Health Sovereignty

Introduction: The Compass of Curiosity

“Stay curious so that empathy can always be part of your character.”

This principle has been the throughline in my life and work. My story is not one of a linear career, but a passionate, purposeful mosaic. It is a story of how curiosity—especially about women’s lives and well-being—has become a powerful engine for teaching, creating, and building tangible change.

I am Shimronde Providence, a creative educator, wellness advocate, mother, and founder of Providence Life Design consultancy, now guiding individuals toward empowered health choices through Travel Medicine Advocacy.

Part 1: The Foundation — Witnessing Systemic Gaps

My formal study of psychology ignited a foundational question: What truly shapes a person’s reality?

I pursued this answer as a Housing Advocate at the Quincy Community Action Program in Massachusetts. There, I worked directly with women who had been failed by systems, families, and circumstance. I saw not just cases, but individuals in profound, cyclical struggle. This role also revealed a painful paradox: the dedicated helpers within the structure were themselves often depleted, operating in a state of financial and spiritual lack.

I realized that the well-being of the helper is not a luxury, but a prerequisite for effective service. This insight became a cornerstone of my philosophy and a personal mandate I would later have to fulfill for myself.

Part 2: The Creative Pivot — Building New Realities

Driven to build rather than just mend, my curiosity led me to the New York School of Interior Design. I understood environment as imperative; the cultivation of personal space can propel or dampen one’s spirit. My career morphed into specification, project management for brands like Opustone and Crate & Barrel, and overseeing construction projects internationally.

With each pivot—from telecommunications to social services to design—I gathered tools: precision, analytical skill, project management, and the audacity to believe I could learn complex systems. This skill set would later become invaluable for a different kind of construction project: building a pathway to personal health sovereignty.

Part 3: A Defining Choice — Motherhood and Medical Autonomy in Guyana

A defining moment in my understanding of medical agency came with the birth of my last child. I made a deliberate and conscious choice to seek care abroad, selecting a leading facility in Guyana. This decision was rooted in a naturopathic humanity, advised and supervised by medical professionals, yet free from a blind allegiance to the highly institutionalized protocols common in American care.

The facility was fully equipped, but the approach was profoundly different. The doctor’s bedside manner was characterized by a deep curiosity; he took time to understand me, my background, and my philosophy. This created a symbiotic partnership in care that respected my autonomy.

This experience was my first conscious foray into traveling for care. It planted a powerful seed, revealing the possibility of combining medical excellence with personalized, respectful treatment. It also introduced the shadows I would later dedicate myself to navigating for others: opaque systems and the vulnerability of being a patient in an unfamiliar terrain.

Part 4: The Crucible — A Body’s Rebellion & A Mission’s Call

Before my body demanded center stage, my empathy pulled me into co-founding a startup focused on Black Maternal Health. I applied my project-building skills to dismantle the very systemic failures I had long observed.

Then, my own health intervened. The journey to a total hip replacement was an education in itself—a slow crescendo of pain that society teaches us to normalize.

“What no one talks about is how that growing resistance to pain tolerance reshapes you. It forces a hypersensitivity that, if you listen, becomes a non-negotiable demand to prioritize self-care.”

My body was forcing me to practice what I knew was missing in so many systems. My search for solutions led me to a physiotherapist in Accra, Ghana. This consultation, another instance of seeking knowledge across borders, was a pivotal step toward the surgery I needed. At this point, he was the fourth doctor I consulted regarding this specific debilitation.

This physical rebuild—this reconstruction of my own foundation—was the catalyst that solidified Providence Life Design. It was born from the hard-won truth that wellness is not abstract; it is the essential infrastructure for a functioning life.

Part 5: The Global Lexicon — Experience as Expertise

My professional and personal journey is underpinned by a profound, lived familiarity with the world. I have traveled to and worked in over 20 countries across five continents, including Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Suriname, Brazil, Colombia, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Switzerland, Ethiopia, Turkey, Qatar, and the UAE. This is not a mere list of destinations; it is a deep, personal lexicon of place.

Having coordinated projects in Guyana, sought consultations in Ghana, navigated the markets of Dubai, and walked the streets of Accra, I understand the nuances—from logistical realities and cultural sensibilities to the tangible feeling of being a stranger in a new system. This firsthand, on-the-ground experience across diverse cultures and infrastructures forms an indispensable foundation for guiding others through complex international systems.

Part 6: The Integration — From Patient to Strategic Ally

Recovery brought clarity. I synthesized all my experiences: the systemic analysis from social work, the precision and project management from design and construction, the advocacy from maternal health, and the intimate, gritty reality of being a patient who sought care across continents.

I saw the full spectrum with stark clarity: the empowering potential of accessing global excellence for affordable, respectful care, and the devastating pitfalls—the schemes, the poor bedside manner, the permitted misinformation, and the life-crushing weight of medical debt. I witnessed patients being forced to submit to systems lacking in integrity.

I am not a medical professional. I am something equally critical: a seasoned guide and strategic ally. I am the person I needed during my own journeys.

Part 7: The Service — Travel Medicine Advocacy & Companionship

My unique arsenal is now dedicated to this service, which I define as Travel Medicine Advocacy & Companionship. I understand that considering healthcare abroad is not merely a logistical challenge; it is an emotional and psychological leap. It requires navigating fear, misinformation, and complex systems while protecting one’s financial and emotional well-being.

I help individuals, women especially, to:

  • Think Critically: Analyze options beyond local paradigms.
  • Create a Vetted Plan: Develop a clear, researched, and personalized pathway.
  • Navigate with Confidence: Avoid common pitfalls and advocate effectively within foreign systems.

This role is born of lived experience. I believe in leveraging global excellence for personal health while fiercely guarding against exploitation. My mission is to turn a daunting prospect into an empowered, informed choice.

Conclusion: The Invitation — Building Your Resilient Pathway

I am a testament to duality and resilience: a builder of spaces, programs, narratives, and now, safe pathways to health sovereignty.

My journey from advocate to patient to guide is an invitation for you to approach your health with the same curious empathy that has guided me. It is an invitation to demand agency, to see the world as a landscape of possibility, and to seek an ally who navigates with both lived experience and strategic expertise.

If you are considering a path to medical care that looks beyond borders, let us explore that possibility together. I offer my experience not as a prescriptive solution, but as informed companionship for your journey—helping you make choices that are not just about treatment, but about respect, autonomy, and well-being.
